Solar FAQs
Can a Solar Battery Run My Water Pump During a Brownout?
Pump backup needs a motor-starting assessment and a plan for the water system, not just a battery-capacity estimate.

Possibly, if the complete backup system is designed for the pump’s starting and running requirements and the pump circuit is included. The answer depends on the actual motor, controls and other loads. Tell the installer that water supply is a priority before accepting a standard package intended mainly for lights and small electronics.
Identify the pump and its job
Record the pump model, nameplate information and whether it fills a tank, boosts pressure or serves another purpose. Note how often it starts and whether it is essential continuously or only at particular times. Have a qualified person obtain information that requires opening equipment.
Tesla’s backup guidance includes pumps among loads that require an appropriately designed system. [1] That is a general example, not approval of your pump or a claim that every residential battery supports it. The proposal must match the actual Philippine installation and its electrical characteristics.
Check starting capability explicitly
Tesla’s technical guidance treats motor inrush separately from ordinary load sizing. [2] Ask the designer to verify the relevant starting requirement for your pump and compare it with the complete inverter-and-battery capability.
Do not substitute a guessed multiple of running watts for a proper assessment. Different motor and control arrangements can behave differently. If the supplier proposes a soft starter or other modification, require compatibility confirmation from the relevant manufacturers and qualified installation. It should be part of a documented design, not an improvised accessory added after repeated trips.

Separate water storage from electrical storage
Ask whether the household’s water tank and pumping schedule can reduce the need to run the pump during an interruption. This is a planning question for the plumbing and electrical professionals, not a recommendation to alter pressure controls or safety devices yourself.
For an illustrative home, filling an existing suitable tank before a scheduled outage may change the backup requirement. Another home relying on a pressure booster whenever a tap opens may need a different design. The right battery assessment starts with how water is actually delivered, not just the pump’s advertised horsepower.
Estimate energy from measured operating time
If an illustrative pump drew 0.8 kW while running for a total of thirty minutes, it would use 0.4 kWh during that period before other system effects. That calculation does not address starting power, and the numbers are not an estimate for your pump.
Use actual measured or manufacturer-supported demand and a realistic duty cycle. Ask how leakage, frequent cycling or changes in household demand affect the plan. A pump that operates unexpectedly often may need plumbing or equipment attention; buying a larger battery should not be the first response to an unexplained operating pattern.

Check the circuit and outage controls
Ask which backup circuit supplies the pump and how it behaves when the grid fails and returns. Include any controls, sensors or auxiliary equipment necessary for operation. A powered motor alone may not describe the complete water system.
Have qualified personnel assess protection and safe operation. Never connect a pump to an improvised lead, bypass a control or alter the switchboard to obtain backup. If the system has a manual operating sequence, keep clear owner instructions near the household emergency plan and make sure all authorised users understand the limits.
Verify before water supply depends on it
Request a commissioning demonstration appropriate to the pump and system, with simultaneous loads included where relevant. Record what was tested and any restrictions. Reassess after replacing the pump or changing the plumbing arrangement.
Lightning Energy Philippines can include water supply in a household backup assessment when you provide the pump details and usage pattern. Ask for separate answers on starting capability, energy duration and circuit inclusion. Those three answers give a practical basis for planning through a brownout, without assuming that a large battery label guarantees water whenever a tap is opened.
